Dowry is any property or valuable security given directly or indirectly by one party to a marriage to the other party, or by parents of either party, in connection with the marriage. Gifts without demand are not dowry.
Demanding dowry is punishable under Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act with imprisonment up to 2 years and fine up to Rs. 10,000. Giving or taking dowry also attracts the same penalty.
Section 498A IPC deals with cruelty by husband or his relatives. It covers both physical and mental cruelty, including dowry harassment. It is a cognizable, non-bailable offence punishable with up to 3 years imprisonment.
Dowry death (Section 304B IPC) applies when a woman dies within 7 years of marriage due to burns or bodily injury, and it is shown that she was subjected to cruelty for dowry. Section 498A covers cruelty without death.

Section 498A was initially non-compoundable, but the Supreme Court has allowed settlement in genuine cases. However, dowry death (304B) is non-compoundable and cannot be settled.
